My Work

Mentoring

Does This Sound Like You?

Have you started writing your first novel but find yourself stuck? Are you grappling with a spaghetti mess of ideas that won’t quite come together? Or perhaps it’s your confidence that’s wavering, making you question if you can actually finish your book. Maybe you’re unsure about the next steps to take to get your manuscript polished and ready for pitching to agents.

You’ve poured your heart into your story, but now you’re facing the daunting task of getting it over the finish line. You might be asking yourself, “Do I have what it takes?” or “Will anyone even want to read this?” You have a compelling story to tell, but you’re struggling to see the path forward.

It Doesn't Need To Be This Way!

As renowned 14th century poet Dante Alighieri wrote, (long before a certain shoe brand came up with their slogan) “The secret of getting things done is to act.”

Imagine having the support and guidance you need to conquer these challenges. Picture yourself finding clarity in your plot, building your confidence as a writer, and gaining the knowledge you need to refine your manuscript and pitch it successfully to agents. When people ask, “What do you do?” You will be proud to answer, “I am a novelist.”

What I Offer

My mentoring provides structure, support, and accountability for anyone finishing their novel. I only work with a select number of creative writers each year to get their novels out of their heads and onto paper or keyboard, and from there to be publication ready. With years of experience in creative and professional fields, I provide tailored mentoring that is focused on your unique needs. My approach is empathetic, goal-oriented, and driven by desire to use my skills and share my expertise to help others succeed.

Nikki Vallance

Why Choose Me?

I’m Nikki Vallance, I write novels and have a deep passion for all things creative. From baking to sketching, from performing arts to writing, creativity has always been at my core. My journey meandered from a degree in Chemistry, through Chartered accountancy, eventually settling in a long and successful period within recruitment.

Alongside my career, I trained in an internationally accredited coaching qualification, which provided me with the skills to help others achieve their goals and reconnect with their talents and passions.

Despite thoroughly enjoying my time in the corporate world, I realised that my true calling was to embrace my creativity.

As an author in my own right, (my debut novel, Pivotal, was a finalist in both The People’s Book Prize and the Page Turner Awards 2020) I understand the challenges of getting a novel written, edited, and ready for publication. But it is my training as a coach back in 2003 which is invaluable in helping writers unlock their true writing potential.

Mentoring vs. Coaching

While both mentoring and coaching aim to support personal and professional growth, they differ in approach and focus. As a mentor, I offer guidance and share my experiences to help you navigate your writing journey. My role is to provide advice, feedback, and encouragement based on my own knowledge and experiences as a successful novelist and coach. In contrast, coaching typically involves helping individuals set and achieve specific goals through structured techniques and frameworks. That said my background allows me to combine a mixture of coaching and mentoring techniques to provide an enhanced and valuable experience for my clients.

Page Turner Mentoring Award Judge

For the last three years, I was delighted to be asked to be a judge for the prestigious Page Turner Mentoring Award. It has been fantastic to discover some extremely talented emerging writers and mentor them through their writing journeys towards publication.

I won’t teach you how to write or promise you will have a runaway hit in your hands (that’s up to you), but by the end of working with me, you will be thinking like a successful novelist. The key to achieving your writing dreams is your mindset, a clear writing goal, and the determination to make it happen.
